The short answer? Yes — but maybe not in the way you think.

How Tesla Has Changed Over 15 Years

Tesla has gone through a remarkable transformation since the very beginning. The original Roadster? Not a digitally connected car. But the Model S changed everything — and Tesla has only gotten more and more software-defined ever since.

Today, Tesla is the most software-defined vehicle on the market. That’s not marketing talk. That’s genuinely what separates it from everything else.

And that software-first approach turns out to be one of the most important things to understand when comparing model years.


The Two Big Eras: Pre-3Y and Post-3Y

So when someone asks, “Is this an older Tesla?” — the dividing line is pretty much 2018. Anything before the 3 and Y is considered the earlier generation.


Tesla’s Hardware Generations: What’s Actually Inside the Car

Hardware 1 (late 2013/early 2014)

That’s the clincher. That’s why 2024 is the single biggest turning point in Tesla’s model year history.


What Is Hardware 4, Really?

Check this out — because this is worth understanding properly.

Hardware 4 (Tesla calls it AI 4) is Tesla’s latest self-driving computer. Compared to Hardware 3, it has:

  • More RAM — so it can handle bigger, more complex data sets
  • Larger camera sensors — the new Samsung cameras capture significantly more light and detail, especially at night
  • More processing power — but actually consumes less energy to do it
  • Wider camera angles — giving the car better visibility when pulling out of parking spots or navigating tight turns

The result? A car that doesn’t just assist your driving — it does the driving, without needing you to supervise.

Hardware 3 cars are still great. They’ll still drive you around. But they require you to stay engaged. Hardware 4 changes that equation entirely.


The Ryzen Processor: A Mid-Cycle Upgrade Worth Knowing

Here’s a detail most buyers don’t know to look for — and it makes a real difference in everyday use.

Starting around mid-2022, Tesla introduced the Ryzen processor across all models. That means faster response times, faster navigation, and snappier performance on everything that happens on the screen — whether you’re using Netflix, checking maps, or watching the self-driving visualization. It also typically came paired with a really nice pixel matrix headlight upgrade.

Does Your Tesla Have a Heat Pump? (It Matters on Vancouver Island)

This one is super relevant if you live on Vancouver Island.

Earlier Teslas — the original Model S, Model X, and the first Model 3s — came with a PTC heater. That’s a resistive heater, similar to a space heater. It works, but it uses a lot of energy, which cuts into your range.

Starting in 2021, the Model 3 switched to a heat pump. A heat pump is dramatically more efficient — it moves heat rather than generating it — which means you get more range, especially in cooler weather.

The good news? All Model Ys and all Cybertrucks have a heat pump standard. So if you’re shopping for a used Model Y, you’re already covered. But if you’re considering a used Model 3 from before 2021, it’s worth factoring in.


The Software Story: Why an Old Tesla Still Feels New

Here’s something that genuinely surprises people.

If you’ve only ever driven a newer Tesla, and you climb into a 2012 Model S, you’d expect it to feel ancient. But here’s the thing — it doesn’t. Not really. The software is extremely familiar.

And that’s not because the old car stayed the same. It’s because Tesla pushes free software updates to all compatible vehicles, all the time. That 2012 Model S has received years of updates. Features like Dog Mode, the app, the interface — they’ve all evolved on every Tesla that can receive them.

The one exception? The original Roadster. That car doesn’t get updates.

But for everything else, your Tesla keeps getting better just by connecting to Wi-Fi. That’s one of the biggest underrated benefits of Tesla ownership — and most people don’t fully appreciate it until they actually own one.


Buying Used: What to Actually Look For

Mileage or Model Year — Which Matters More?

Neither one wins outright. It genuinely depends on your situation.

If you’re an Uber driver putting 70,000 km a year on a vehicle, just buy new and let the factory warranty protect you. If you’re a family looking for the best value, a well-maintained used Model Y might be the perfect answer. The goal defines the car — not the other way around.

What Makes One Used Tesla Worth More Than Another?

When Julian’s comparing two similar-looking used Teslas, here’s what he looks at:

  • Visual body inspection — any signs of previous damage?
  • Underneath the vehicle — check for frame or suspension issues
  • Tires and brakes — condition tells you a lot about how the car was maintained
  • Remaining warranty — more warranty = more value
  • Added protection — does it have paint protection film, ceramic coating, or a spare set of winter wheels? Those things count.

Can You Get a Warranty on a Used Tesla?

Absolutely. Used Teslas are eligible for extended warranties — up to six additional years after the original warranty expires, provided the car has 200,000 km or less on the odometer. Motorize also offers its own warranty covering up to 80,000 additional kilometres once you’ve made your purchase.


The Biggest Myth About Older Teslas

We hear this one a lot: “EVs are maintenance-free, right?”

Not quite. Low maintenance? Yes. Maintenance-free? No.

As Teslas age and rack up 200,000 to 300,000 km, there are things that need attention — suspension components, tires, brakes, the occasional body item. The cars are genuinely very durable, but they’re still cars. Any sales process that told you otherwise was doing you a disservice.

The good news is that Julian is happy to stand behind any model year of Tesla. There’s no year he wouldn’t sell.


So Which Model Year Should You Actually Buy?

Here’s Julian’s real-world thinking, broken down by situation:

For heavy commuters or families who travel a lot: 2021 or newer Model 3 Long Range or Model Y. You’ll get a heat pump, strong range, and enough warranty left to give you peace of mind.

For younger buyers or first-time EV owners: A used 2018 or newer Model 3 or Model Y. Incredibly popular for a reason — low cost, easy to operate, and great value. These are phenomenal at any price point.

For the best value available today: A used Model 3 in the $20,000 range. Julian says it plainly: a $20,000 used Model 3 will run circles around any other EV at that price point.

For the most future-proof Tesla on the market: The Cybertruck. Steer-by-wire, 48-volt architecture, the most advanced computers Tesla has ever shipped. That vehicle is from the future.

For pure nostalgia and cool factor: Julian would personally consider a vintage black Model S from around 2016. Some of the deleted features from older cars have their own charm — and the cool factor is real.


The One Thing Julian Wishes Every Buyer Understood
