Thinking About Trading In Your Car for an EV? Here’s Everything You Need to Know
Thinking About Trading In Your Car for an EV? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

So here’s something we hear all the time at Motorize.

Someone comes in for a test drive, we’re halfway through the lot, and they quietly say: “You don’t actually take gas cars on trade, do you?”

And we have to smile. Because yes — absolutely yes, we do.

If you’ve been sitting on the fence about making the switch from a gas car to an electric vehicle, this guide is for you. We sat down with Julian, the founder of Motorize Electric Vehicles in Sidney, BC, and asked him every question you’ve probably already been asking yourself. From how a trade-in works, to what your old car is actually worth, to what surprises first-time EV owners the most — it’s all here.

Let’s get into it.

Part 1: How the Trade-In Process Actually Works at Motorize

Do You Only Accept EV Trade-Ins?

Not even close.

“We take all cars on trade,” Julian says. “Doesn’t matter what you drive.”

Gas. Diesel. Hybrid. Another EV. It doesn’t matter. The majority of vehicles that come through Motorize on trade are actually between 10 and 15 years old — perfectly ordinary, well-used family cars that someone is finally ready to move on from.

So if you’ve been holding back because you assumed your 2009 Mazda CX-7 wouldn’t be welcome here, you can let that one go.

How Does the Trade-In Process Work?

This is the part people are genuinely surprised by. It’s fast.

Here’s all we need to give you a realistic trade-in value: the condition of your vehicle and the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number — that 17-digit code on your dashboard). That’s it. As long as we have internet access and those two pieces of information, we can have a number back to you in about five minutes.

Call us. Text us. Email us. Walk in. Whatever works best for you.

Do You Have to Buy a Car from Motorize to Get an Appraisal?

No. Full stop.

“If you’re in a position that you’re selling — it doesn’t matter for what reason — we would be delighted to give you an offer on your trade,” Julian says.

We’ll either purchase your vehicle outright or help you figure out the best way to move it. No purchase required. No strings attached.

Part 2: Should You Trade Your Gas Car for an EV?

What’s the Biggest Reason People Are Making the Switch?

The answer is simple: money.

Fuel is expensive. It’s going up. And for a lot of families on Vancouver Island, that cost adds up quickly every single month. The operating cost of an electric vehicle is dramatically lower than a gas car — and that gap widens every time you fill up at the pump.

“The biggest driving factor is the cost savings of an EV,” Julian says. And he’s right. When you do the math, the savings are real and they’re ongoing.

Who Benefits the Most from Switching?

The more you drive, the more you save. It’s that straightforward.

If you’re commuting daily, running kids to school and activities, or putting serious kilometres on your car each week — you are exactly the person an EV is designed for. Every kilometre you drive in an electric vehicle instead of a gas car is money staying in your pocket instead of going to the fuel pump.

Think of it like this: if you can get to work and back for $2 instead of $10, why wouldn’t you?

What Should You Ask Yourself Before Making the Switch?

Julian says the list of things to figure out is actually pretty short:

  • How much range do I need on a typical day?
  • Will I be going on road trips, or is this mostly local driving?
  • Does the car need to serve multiple purposes?
  • Will I charge at home, or primarily use public chargers?

And what about budget? Here’s something that surprises a lot of people: used EVs at Motorize start at $6,000. So regardless of where your budget sits, there’s very likely an electric car that fits.

What If I’m Still Not Sure?

Try one. Not for twenty minutes — for a weekend.

“Most test drives, you’re only going to get a car for maybe 15 or 20 minutes,” Julian says. “But at Motorize, we’ll actually give you the car overnight, or perhaps over the weekend, if it would take you a little bit longer to see how this is going to fit into your lifestyle.”

This is genuinely one of the best things about the Motorize experience. You get to live with the car — charge it at home, drive your actual routes, go to your actual places — before you make any decision. No pressure. No salesperson in the passenger seat.

Part 3: What Is Your Trade-In Actually Worth?

What Factors Determine Trade-In Value?

When Motorize evaluates your vehicle, here’s what they’re looking at:

  • Mileage — How far has it gone, and how much warranty (if any) is left?
  • History — What’s the background on this vehicle?
  • Maintenance status — Does it need brakes, tires, or other work?
  • Overall condition — Inside and out, what shape is the car in?

Get those four things nailed down and you can have a fair value in minutes.

How Does Mileage Affect Value — and Is It Different for EVs?

For any vehicle, higher mileage generally means a lower trade-in value. That’s standard. But here’s where EVs get interesting.

“Historically speaking, an average gas car we would probably see end of life at around 200,000 or maybe 300,000 km,” Julian explains. “But now we’re noticing many EVs will last considerably longer than that.”

That means a well-maintained EV with higher mileage can still hold significant value — because there’s a lot of life left in it.

And don’t let high mileage stop you from bringing your vehicle in. “There’s no car with too many miles to trade in here,” Julian says.

What About Battery Health on a Used EV?

Battery health — basically, how well your EV’s battery is holding its charge — does affect trade-in value. A battery in great shape gets you more money. That’s just the reality.

But here’s the good news: the cost of replacement batteries has come down significantly. So even if your battery isn’t in perfect condition, it’s not a barrier for Motorize to make you a fair offer. It just gets factored into the math.

How Do You Maximize Your Trade-In Value?

Here’s Julian’s single best tip: get your car detailed before you trade it in.

“For every dollar you spend detailing your car prior to a trade-in, you’ll probably get two dollars back in vehicle value.”

It’s the same logic as staging a house before you sell it. A clean, well-presented car reads as a cared-for car. And cared-for cars are worth more.

Now, here’s the thing about deferred maintenance — if your car needs tires or has a known mechanical issue, you don’t necessarily have to fix it before trading in. But understand how it affects the math. If your car is worth $10,000 but it needs $1,500 in tires and other work, Motorize is going to offer you around $7,500. The formula is straightforward: fair market value minus the cost of required service and any damage items = your wholesale trade value. Simple and transparent.

When Does Trading In Make More Sense Than Selling Privately?

There’s actually a significant tax advantage to trading in your vehicle when you’re buying from a BC dealer.

Here’s how it works: when you trade in a vehicle and purchase another vehicle from a licensed BC dealer, you only pay GST and PST on the difference between what you’re buying and what your trade is worth. Not on the full purchase price — on the gap.

That can translate into meaningful savings depending on the numbers involved.

And then there’s the simplicity factor. If you’re buying a new car from Motorize and trading something in at the same time, the whole process — paperwork included — can be wrapped up within an hour. Compare that to the time, effort, and uncertainty of selling privately, and for most people, the trade-in route is the clear winner.

Part 4: Trading In for a Used Tesla — and Other EV Options

Why Does Tesla Content Get So Much Attention?

It’s a fair question — and Julian has thought about it.

“Tesla produces their vehicles in a large volume, and there are many people who really trust the Tesla brand — not only for automotive stuff, but home charging, solar, battery storage,” he says. “A lot of people have made an environmental commitment, and they feel they can only get there with a Tesla vehicle.”

Tesla has built a genuinely wide and loyal audience. And that audience watches Tesla content.

Is Motorize Competitive on Used Tesla Trade-In Values?

Yes — and Julian is direct about it.

“We will compete penny for penny against all the other vendors. We’ll make sure to offer you the same or more than you would get from Tesla, or Clutch, or any other dealer making you an offer.”

So if you’re thinking of trading in a used Tesla and wondering whether Motorize will match what you’d get elsewhere — bring it in and find out. The offer might surprise you.

Is a Used Tesla the Best Choice for Someone Switching from a Gas Car?

It depends on how you drive, but the numbers don’t lie: the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y are the most popular vehicles Motorize sells when someone is trading in a gas vehicle.

That said, Julian always wants to understand your use case before recommending any specific model. Because the best EV for you is the one that fits your life — not just the most popular one on the lot.

Part 5: First-Time EV Ownership — What to Expect

What’s the Biggest Concern for First-Time EV Buyers?

Charging. Almost always, it’s charging.

“The sentiment is: I’m just not used to this. Having to charge a car,” Julian says.

And here’s the analogy he uses, which honestly just works: Think about when you got your first smartphone. Before that, you’d never thought about charging a phone. But now? You plug it in every night without thinking. It’s just part of the routine.

“If you can handle a cellphone and you can plug it in, and you don’t find yourself running out of battery constantly on your cellphone — you’ll have no trouble transitioning from an internal combustion vehicle over to an electric car.”

What Surprises First-Time EV Owners the Most?

Two things come up again and again.

First: the torque. EVs deliver their power instantly — no waiting for an engine to rev up. The acceleration catches a lot of new drivers off guard in the best possible way.

Second: how quiet it is. And beyond that, upgrading to a more modern vehicle often means stepping into a much more comfortable, feature-rich interior than whatever they were driving before. People come back from their first week genuinely pleased with the whole experience.

What Mistakes Should You Avoid During the Trade-In Process?

Julian’s checklist for a smooth trade-in:

  • ✅ Bring all your keys — including spares you haven’t used in years
  • ✅ Gather your hubcaps and any accessories that came with the vehicle
  • ✅ Clear out all personal belongings before you arrive
  • ✅ Have your vehicle registration ready
  • ✅ If there’s joint ownership on the vehicle, both registered owners need to be present (or both need to sign the transfer forms) — this one catches people off guard, so plan ahead

Who Is the Perfect Candidate to Switch to an EV?

Here’s Julian’s honest answer: anyone driving a gas car.

“The perfect candidate is somebody who’s financially motivated — either by an emotional need to replace an old, unreliable car, or a financial need to be more frugal with their transportation spending.”

And yes, that includes Uber and rideshare drivers. If you’re putting 250–400 km on your car every single day, an EV doesn’t just work for you — it makes you more money, because you’re not handing a significant chunk of your earnings back to the fuel pump.
